I took this photo last October. It was at Bienenfarm Airport in Brandenburg, west of Berlin, when we were about to take a sightseeing flight in a Cessna. In the background is an old Antonov, a beautiful red gleaming in the sun. And it matched my son’s hat so well.
Last night, the plane carrying 12 passengers crashed shortly after takeoff. The cause is still unknown. Today I was on weekend duty at rbb, and this became my news story (link no longer works — Notlandung Doppeldecker). I recognized the aircraft immediately.
What a coincidence. It had flipped over, but fortunately only five people suffered minor injuries.
Using two tractors and a few long cables, the plane was pulled upright by the 17-year-old son of a local farmer. Nice work. And despite the damage totaling about 80,000 euros (total loss), it still looked stately.
The photo now has an extra story to tell.
