Moiesstudio 100.7: New Elections in the Netherlands
Early parliamentary elections will be held in the Netherlands on Wednesday. Radio 100.7 asked journalist Ulrike Nagel what the polls are predicting for today’s election.
The outcome is uncertain. According to polls, Geert Wilders and his “Party for Freedom” could repeat their 2023 election victory.
However, Geert Wilders has little chance of becoming prime minister. The other major parties rule out forming a coalition with him. The second-strongest party in the polls is currently the left-wing GroenLinks/PvdA alliance led by former EU Commissioner Frans Timmermans.
The center-right CDA party, led by Henri Bontenbal—who is considered a rising star in Dutch politics—is also doing well in the polls. The current four-party Dutch coalition government collapsed this summer due to a dispute over immigration policy.
Summary of the Discussion
Geert Wilders and the PVV: Wilders’ party, the PVV (Partij voor de Vrijheid), had long been far ahead in the polls but has lost support in recent days.
Possible explanation: One reason for the decline could be that Wilders participated in only part of the election campaign. He had to step back for a while due to a threat and possible plans for terrorist attacks and did not rejoin the campaign until later.
He took part in only a few debates and did not seem to want to take center stage, which led to speculation that he might want to remain in the opposition.
In the final TV debate before the election, unlike in previous years, he did not come across as as eloquent or vocal.
Forming a Government and Wilders:
Wilders ensured that the last government lasted only two years and that this period was marked by chaos, which could cost him votes.
Most other parties have categorically ruled out cooperating with him or forming a government with him.
Only the JA21 party has not ruled out a coalition with him in the run-up to the election.
Current Election Situation:
The situation is extremely tense and unpredictable.
The latest polls show that four parties are roughly neck and neck.
Shortly before the election, about 30% of voters still did not know who to vote for, which adds to the uncertainty.
A coalition with the far right is currently unlikely, as other parties are unwilling to enter into such an arrangement.
Both a grand coalition and an alliance on the left are possible—the election results could still go either way.
