Radio 1: “The average German is happy with his life”

A recent study shows that many middle-aged Germans say they are satisfied with their lives. And after years of the COVID-19 crisis, high inflation, and war on the continent, this positive outlook is quite surprising. Germany expert Ulrike Nagel tells us more in the “In the Spotlight” section.

In this interview

Journalist Ulrike Nagel discusses a recent study on the program “Bureau Buitenland” that shows middle-aged Germans (ages 30–59) are satisfied with their lives, despite the COVID-19 crisis, high inflation, and war in Europe.

  • Study on “Generation Mitte” [00:31]: The study, commissioned by the insurance association, shows that “Generation Mitte” (30–59-year-olds) is more satisfied than during the COVID-19 years and even happier than before that. This group funds the social safety net and experiences low unemployment, with many options in the labor market. Nearly 40% are very satisfied with their standard of living [01:26].
  • Concerns and Uncertainties [01:52]: Although satisfied with their social and financial status and their jobs, these Germans do acknowledge that they are living in uncertain times and see major challenges facing the country. They want reforms, particularly in the areas of healthcare and education, and are concerned about their pensions.
  • East-West Differences [02:19]: It is striking that people in East Germany want much more change (nearly 60%) than those in West Germany (44%).
  • Contrast with Young People [02:50]: Another recent study, however, shows that young people are unhappy and view the future negatively, because they still have to start everything from scratch in an uncertain world.
