In these times of COVID-19, many people are planning to spend their vacation at home in Germany this year; many don’t even want to leave Berlin anymore—it’s so nice here, after all! Of course, you can also take a break to enjoy some peace and quiet and get out into nature right here. Our excursion tip: bike along the Alte Spree.

Highlights of the tour:

Gerhart Hauptmann Museum in Erkner: Right at the start of the tour, you’ll come across the first point of interest—the museum where the writer spent several years of his life. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Spree Cycle Path: The route takes you onto the Spree Cycle Path, which is 360 km long in total. The route shown here begins with a leisurely 6 km ride through the forest.
Jägerbude Campground: Here, you can enjoy your first refreshment at the restaurant. The owner, Ronnek Philipp, reports that demand for day trips is high and that the Pentecost weekend was very busy for the first time in a long while, especially with families. Social distancing rules are being observed on the patio.
Nature and Idyll: Along the way, you can observe nature, such as a pair of swans with their cygnets on the Alte Spree.
Holly’s Gallery Café: After another 8 km, past Hartmannsdorf and Spreenhagen, the next culinary stop awaits. Doris Hollnagel has been baking cakes by feel here for 10 years for anyone who stops by. On busy days, she bakes up to 25 trays.
Route: Well-fortified, the journey continues north—for example, to the Mönchswinkel waterfront rest area and back to Erkner via the two lakes near Grünheide and Fangschleuse.
