Live RTV Utrecht: The market isn’t doing well (2007)

UTRECHT – The market vendors on Vredenburg in Utrecht have been suffering heavy losses since the bus stopped running there. The bus stop was removed because construction is underway at that location for the Muziekpaleis. Vendors say their sales have dropped by 30 to 40 percent.

The market vendors want the bus stop near the market to be reinstated, an additional crosswalk to be added, and the signage to be improved.

Ulrike Nagel reported live from Vredenburgplein for RTV Utrecht.

Summary

The RTV Utrecht video covers the markets in Utrecht, focusing on their declining popularity and the challenges they face.

Here is a summary of the key points:

  • Issues: Although the market on Vredenburg Square does well on Saturdays, business is slower on Wednesdays and Fridays. Six market vendors have already closed their stalls on Smaragdplein in recent years.
  • Causes: The main cause is competition from supermarkets. It’s also noted that more young people have moved into areas such as Smaragdplein and Hoograven, and they tend to visit the market less often. Working hard at the market no longer always yields enough to cover costs.
  • Earnings: Fruit and vegetable vendor Willem van Ommeren shows that he’s still selling well, but notes that his colleagues are struggling. Market vendor Ruud Ruijters agrees that the “cream has been skimmed off” and that fewer extra items are being sold. The general feeling is that sales have dropped by about 30% compared to the past.
  • Solutions/Developments: The municipality is trying to save the market by, for example, not raising market fees and adjusting the rules so that stall spaces can be more easily transferred to a successor. The best news is the municipality’s plan to set up a new market in Leidsche Rijn, despite the problems. Many families live there who are likely to visit the market, and more than 100 vendors have already signed up to set up shop there.

The video features a conversation between two studio hosts and a live reporter, Ulrike Nagel, at the Vredenburg in Utrecht, interspersed with footage and interviews from the market.
